RESUMO

In rice-vegetable rotation systems in tropical areas, a large amount of nitrate nitrogen accumulates after fertilization in the melon and vegetable season, which leads to the leaching of nitrate nitrogen and a large amount of N2O emission after the seasonal flooding of rice, which leads to nitrogen loss and intensification of the greenhouse effect. How to improve the utilization rate of nitrate nitrogen and reduce N2O emissions has become an urgent problem to be solved. Six treatments were set up [200 mg·kg-1 KNO3 (CK); 200 mg·kg-1 KNO3 + 2% biochar addition (B); 200 mg·kg-1 KNO3+1% peanut straw addition (P); 200 mg·kg-1 KNO3 + 2% biochar + 1% peanut straw addition (P+B); 200 mg·kg-1 KNO3 + 1% rice straw addition (R); 200 mg·kg-1 KNO3 + 2% biochar+1% rice straw addition (R+B)] and cultured at 25℃ for 114 d to explore the effects of organic material addition on greenhouse gas emissions and nitrogen use after flooding in high nitrate nitrogen soil. The results showed that compared with that in CK, adding straw or combining straw with biochar significantly increased soil pH (P<0.05). The B and P treatments significantly increased the cumulative N2O emissions by 41.6% and 28.5% (P<0.05), and the P+B, R, and R+B treatments significantly decreased the cumulative N2O emissions by 14.1%, 24.7%, and 36.7% (P<0.05), respectively. The addition of straw increased the net warming potential of greenhouse gases (NGWP). The addition of coir biochar significantly reduced the effect of straw on NGWP (P<0.05). The combined application of straw and biochar decreased NGWP, and P+B significantly decreased NGWP, but that with R+B was not significant (P>0.05). Adding straw or biochar significantly increased soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC) (P<0.05), and that of P+B was the highest (502.26 mg·kg-1). The combined application of straw and biochar increased soil microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN), and that of P+B was the highest. The N2O emission flux was negatively correlated with pH (P<0.01) and positively correlated with NH4+-N and NO3--N (P<0.01). The cumulative emission of N2O was negatively correlated with MBN (P<0.05). There was a significant negative correlation between NO3--N and MBN (P<0.01), indicating that the reduction in NO3--N was likely to be held by microorganisms, and the increase in the microbial hold of NO3--N also reduced N2O emission. In conclusion, the combined application of peanut straw and coconut shell biochar could significantly inhibit N2O emission and increase soil MBC and MBN, which is a reasonable measure to make full use of nitrogen fertilizer, reduce nitrogen loss, and slow down N2O emission after the season of Hainan vegetables.

RESUMO

The effects of biochar application on soil nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) emissions in a typical rice-vegetable rotation system in Hainan after two years were investigated. The aim was to clarify the long-term effects of biochar on greenhouse gas emissions under this model, and it provided a theoretical basis for N2O and CH4 emission reduction in rice-vegetable rotation systems in tropical regions of China. Four treatments were set up in the field experiment, including no nitrogen fertilizer control (CK); nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizer (CON); nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizer combined with 20 t·hm-2 biochar (B1); and nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizer combined with 40 t·hm-2 biochar (B2). The results showed that: ① compared with that in the CON treatment, the B1 and B2 treatments significantly reduced N2O emissions by 32% and 54% in the early rice season (P < 0.05, the same below), but the B1 and B2 treatments significantly increased N2O emissions by 31% and 81% in the late rice season. The cumulative emissions of N2O in the pepper season were significantly higher than those in the early and late rice seasons, and the B1 treatment significantly reduced N2O emissions by 35%. There was no significant difference between the B2 and CON treatments. ② Compared with that in the CON treatment, B1 and B2 significantly reduced CH4 emissions by 63% and 65% in the early rice season, and the B2 treatment significantly increased CH4 emissions by 41% in the late rice season. There was no significant difference between the B1 and CON treatments. There was no significant difference in cumulative CH4 emissions between treatments in the pepper season. ③ The late rice season contributed to the main global warming potential (GWP) of the rice-vegetable rotation system, and CH4 emissions determined the magnitude of GWP and greenhouse gas emission intensity (GHGI). After two years of biochar application, B1 reduced the GHGI of the whole rice-vegetable rotation system, and B2 increased the GHGI and reached a significant level. However, the B1 and B2 treatments significantly reduced GHGI in the early rice season and pepper season, and only the B2 treatment increased GHGI in the late rice season. ④ Compared with that in the CON treatment, the B1 and B2 treatments significantly increased the yield of early rice by 33% and 51%, and the B1 and B2 treatments significantly increased the yield of pepper season by 53% and 81%. In the late rice season, there was no significant difference in yield except for in the CK treatment without nitrogen fertilizer. The results showed that the magnitude of greenhouse gas emissions in the tropical rice-vegetable rotation system was mainly determined by CH4 emissions in the late rice season. After two years of biochar application, only low biochar combined with nitrogen fertilizer had a significant emission reduction effect, but high and low biochar combined with nitrogen fertilizer increased the yield of early rice and pepper crops continuously.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study explored the relationship between blame/sympathy and blamer's/sympathizer's perceived health status. DESIGN: We recruited participants via an online survey platform. Study 1 was a cross-sectional study using data (N = 3304, Mage = 28.22, SDage = 7.92, and 39.3% female) collected from 30 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions of China on February 3, 2020. Study 2 used the daily diary method collecting data from February 4 to 9, 2020. Sample (N = 2456, Mage = 28.49, SDage = 7.49, and 39.4% were female) was obtained by inviting participants in Study 1 on the same platform. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Self-reported health status and life satisfaction. RESULTS: In Study 1, blame was negatively associated with perceived health status, while sympathy was positively associated with it. Negative emotions and risk perception are the underlying mechanisms, but neither of them has effects on the relationship between sympathy and perceived health status. Study 2 replicated these results using multilevel analysis. CONCLUSION: The results highlight the importance of people's attitudes on perceived health status. While sympathy is positively related to perceived health status, blaming has a negative association with perceived health status. Negative emotions and risk perceptions are the underlying mechanisms.

RESUMO

Biochar application may mitigate N2O emissions and increase crop yield, yet little is known about microbial dynamics variation. To investigate the potential of increasing yield and reducing emissions of biochar in tropical areas and the dynamic mechanism of related microorganisms, a pot experiment was conducted to investigate the biochar application on pepper yield, N2O emissions, and dynamic variation of related microorganisms. Three treatments were applied:2% biochar amendment (B), conventional fertilization (CON), and no nitrogen (CK). The results showed that the yield of the CON treatment was higher than that of the CK treatment. Compared with that of the CON treatment, biochar amendment significantly increased the yield of pepper by 18.0% (P<0.05), and biochar amendment could increase the content of NH+4-N and NO-3-N in soil in most periods of pepper growth. Compared with that in the CON treatment, the B treatment significantly reduced cumulative N2O emissions by 18.3% (P<0.05). Ammonia oxidizing archaea (AOA)-amoA and ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB)-amoA were very significantly negatively correlated with N2O flux (P<0.01). N2O flux was significantly negatively correlated with nosZ gene abundance (P<0.05). This indicated that N2O emission may have mainly resulted from the denitrification process. In the early stage of pepper growth, biochar significantly reduced N2O emissions by reducing the value of (nirK+nirS)/nosZ, whereas in the late stage of pepper growth, the value of (nirK+nirS)/nosZ of the B treatment was higher than that of the CON treatment, resulting in higher N2O flux in the B treatment. Therefore, biochar amendment could not only increase vegetable production in tropical areas but also reduce N2O emissions, which can be used as a new strategy to improve soil fertility in Hainan Province and other tropical areas.

RESUMO

COVID-19 has become one of the top global health concerns. The present research examined the relationship between media use and protective behavior. The moderating role of SARS memory was also examined. A cross-sectional study found that media use was associated with more protective behaviors (i.e. preventive behavior, and avoidant behavior). We further found that SARS memory moderated the association between media use and avoidant behavior. Moreover, the moderating role of SARS memory on the relationship between daily media use and daily protective behavior was again tested using a daily design in Study 2. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

RESUMO

In China, Hyphantria cunea (Drury) is an invasive phytophagous pest; it attacks nearly all species of defoliated trees. To develop integrated pest management programs (IPM) for H. cunea, we need to ensure the availability of insects by mass-rearing them on artificial diets under laboratory conditions. This study compared the growth characteristics, nutritional indices, growth indices, and digestive enzyme activity of insects reared on Pterocarya stenoptera C.DC (Fagales: Juglandaceae), the Chinese wingnut, and an artificial diet. We also investigated the correlation between diet components and growth indices using principal components analysis and Pearson correlation analysis. We found that mass-rearing of H. cunea on an artificial diet was feasible. It led to a shorter developmental period, with heavier larvae and pupae than natural diets. The principal components analysis indicated that the growth indices and α-Amylase were significantly positively associated with PC1, which explained 82.45% of the total data variability. Pearson correlation analysis showed a significant correlation between digestion, absorption parameters, and growth. Developing a mass-rearing program to produce H. cunea on an artificial diet will be valuable for improving IPM strategies. Understanding the mechanism of the responses of phytophagous insect populations to anthropogenic diet regulation can provide new ideas and methods for pest control.

RESUMO

With the development of miniaturization, lightweight and integration of electronic devices, the demand for high-temperature dielectric capacitors is becoming urgent. Nevertheless, the breakdown strength and polarization are deteriorated at high temperatures due to the thermal energy assisting the electron transport and impeding the dipole alignment. Here, a structure of capacitor with double gradients of dielectric constant gradient and strain gradient is designed to achieve high breakdown strength, high working temperature, and high energy storage density simultaneously. It is found that the designed structure of BaHf0.17 Ti0.83 O3 /1mol% SiO2 doped BaZr0.35 Ti0.65 O3 /0.85BaTiO3 -0.15Bi(Mg0.5 Zr0.5 )O3 exhibits excellent energy storage performance. The energy storage density of 127.3 J cm-3 with an energy storage efficiency of 79.6% is realized in the up-sequence multilayer with period N = 2 at room temperature. Moreover, when the working temperature varies from -100 to 200 °C, the energy storage density of the N = 4 capacitor keeps stably at 84.62 J cm-3 with an energy storage efficiency 78.42% at 6.86 MV cm-1 . All these properties promise great potential applications of the designed multilayer capacitors with the double gradients in harsh environments, and the design principle can be applicable to other systems to boost working temperature.

RESUMO

Industry has been seeking a thin-film capacitor that can work at high temperature in a harsh environment, where cooling systems are not desired. Up to now, the working temperature of the thin-film capacitor is still limited up to 200 °C. Herein, we design a multilayer structure with layers of paraferroelectric (Ba0.3Sr0.7TiO3, BST) and relaxor ferroelectric (0.85BaTiO3-0.15Bi(Mg0.5Zr0.5)O3, BT-BMZ) to realize optimum properties with a flat platform of dielectric constant and high breakdown strength for excellent energy storage performance at high temperature. Through optimizing the multilayer structure, a highly stable relaxor ferroelectric state is obtained for the BST/BT-BMZ multilayer thin-film capacitor with a total thickness of 230 nm, a period number N = 8, and a layer thickness ratio of BST/BT-BMZ = 3/7. The optimized multilayer film shows significantly improved energy storage density (up to 30.64 J/cm3) and energy storage efficiency (over 70.93%) in an ultrawide temperature range from room temperature to 250 °C. Moreover, the multilayer system also exhibits excellent thermal stability in such an ultrawide temperature range with a change of 5.15 and 12.75% for the recoverable energy density and energy storage efficiency, respectively. Our results demonstrate that the designed thin-film capacitor is promising for the application in a harsh environment and open a way to tailor a thin-film capacitor toward higher working temperature with enhanced energy storage performance.

RESUMO

To investigate phosphate-solubilizing characteristics and plant growth-promoting effect of Talaromyces aurantiacus (JXBR04) from Phyllostachys edulis rhizosphere soil, the influence of culture time, carbon sources, nitrogen sources, initial pH, liquid filling volume, and salt ions on phosphate solubilizing ability of strain JXBR04 were examined. The capability to solubilize different types of mineral phosphate was detected using a liquid fermentation method. A pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of strain JXBR04 in promoting the growth of Ph. edulis seedlings. The results showed that strain JXBR04 displayed the highest phosphate-dissolving capacity when the cultivation period was 7 days, the initial pH reached 3.5, the volume of liquid was 1/5 or 2/5, and the NaCl concentration was 0 or 1.0 g·L-1. The phosphate-dissolving ability of the strain was the highest when using sugar as carbon source and yeast powder as nitrogen source. The strain had the greatest ability to solubilize CaHPO4 with 1304.04 mg·L-1, followed by Ca3(PO4)2 and FePO4. We found that available nutrients, leaf, stem, and root phosphorus contents in rhizospheric soil significantly increased in Ph. edulis after 180 days of inoculation with strain JXBR04. In addition, Ph. edulis inoculated with strain JXBR04 had 28.1%, 28.3%, and 51.5% higher ground diameter, seedling height, and biomass accumulation than that without JXBR04, respectively. Our findings suggested that T. aurantiacus has the potential to be applied as environment-friendly biofertilizers in maso bamboo forest in the acid soil in southern China.

RESUMO

Altruistic behaviors typically improve the welfare of the recipient at the cost of the performer's resources and energy. Do altruistic performers obtain any positive internal reward from altruistic behaviors? We conducted six experiments to explore whether altruistic behaviors could increase performer's warmth perception of the ambient environment. The first three studies focused on crisis situations. A retrospective field study (Study 1, with Hurricane Sandy) and two laboratory studies (Studies 2a and 2b, with an earthquake scenario) found that people who helped others felt warmer of the ambient environment than people who did not. We extended to daily life situations and found that participants who performed helping behaviors in laboratory (either voluntarily in Study 3a or randomly assigned to in Study 3b) and passers-by who donated to a charity (Study 4) reported warmer perception of the ambient environment than those who did not. These findings suggested an immediate internal reward of altruism.

RESUMO

A lot of researchers discussed the influence of passengers on drivers' behaviors without reaching a consistent conclusion. This study aimed to offer some new evidence concerning this issue. The study examined different effects of supervisors and friends as passengers on drivers' propensities for angry driving. In Study 1, drivers were asked to freely imagine a passenger either as their supervisor or friend. Results showed that compared with driving alone, drivers' propensities for angry driving increased when the passenger was a friend but decreased when the passenger was a supervisor. These findings were consistent with the generally accepted social norm. In Study 2, drivers read a description about either an aggressive supervisor or a cautious friend. Results showed that the effects of passengers on drivers' angry driving propensities were correspondingly reversed, indicating that a clearer behavior standard conveyed by a passenger had a stronger effect on drivers. Self-monitoring propensity showed a main effect on drivers' propensities for angry driving in a standard-free situation. And self-monitoring propensity moderated the effect of a passenger's role on angry driving propensities in a standard-set situation. Impression management processes were discussed with respect to these findings.
